Berlin, Germany – November 12, 2025 — Kreuzberg has begun operating Berlin’s first automated waste sorting system, aiming to cut landfill contributions by nearly a third within two years. The facility, which opened on 12 November, uses advanced sensors and machine learning to separate recyclables from household refuse at unprecedented speed and accuracy. District officials say the technology can identify and sort materials previously considered too complex for standard recycling, such as multilayer packaging and small electronics. “This marks a major step towards a cleaner, more resource-efficient city,” stated project lead Dr. Lena Vogt. Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming educational tours and recycling workshops.
