Berlin sets ambitious target for mountain newt habitats in Tempelhof with citywide biodiversity initiative

Berlin, Germany – November 12, 2025 — Berlin has announced a comprehensive urban biodiversity programme centred on restoring habitats for the endangered mountain newt at Tempelhof, with plans to establish 15 protected zones by August 2028. The initiative, coordinated by the city’s Department for the Environment, brings together ecologists, local schools, and community groups to revitalise wetlands and introduce native vegetation across the former airport site. Dr. Lena Hoffmann, project lead, highlighted the importance of citizen science in monitoring newt populations. The first restoration site is scheduled to open in March 2026, marking a significant step towards safeguarding Berlin’s urban wildlife for future generations.
